The play begins with a man. Distinguished, yes, with just a hint of bitterness about him. Not enough to turn the audience from him, not enough to elicit pity mind you, but just enough to color his performance. He's selling wine. But something is not quite right. The line maybe? The wine perhaps? The lights? The camera? Suddenly he smashes the glass against the wall in rage! Then marvels at the perfect way the glass shattered and how he couldn't recreate that "perfect" shatter again in a million takes. This is Orson Welles: The One Man Show! (What else?) Director, writer, actor, producer, and "force of nature", he worked extensively in film, Theatre, television and radio. Noted for his innovative dramatic productions as well as his distinctive voice and personality, Welles is widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished dramatic artists of the twentieth century, especially for his significant and influential early work and despite his notoriously contentious relationship with Hollywood. Welles' long career in film is noted for his struggle for artistic control in the face of pressure from studios, which resulted in many of his films being severely edited and others left unreleased. He has thus been praised as a major creative force and as a true "One Man Show!"
